What is my username?

I can log in but when I move around the site the system logs me out

Can you see the 'Welcome back' message to the top left of the screen when you log in?  If so, the being logged out problem is probably to do with how cookies are set up on your web browser.  Cookies are small files placed on the hard drive of your computer which store your web preferences.

Internet Explorer

If you're using Internet Explorer version 6, 7 or 8*, check your cookie setting as follows:

  1. Open Internet Explorer and choose Tools from the Task Bar
  2. Then Internet Options
  3. Click the Privacy tab
  4. The default setting is Medium, which should allow you to accept cookies. To change your setting to Medium, simply move the slider. If your setting has been set to Custom, click the Advanced button and choose Accept Cookies.

If you're using Internet Explorer 5.0, it's time to request an upgrade as you'll find nothing really works! If you're not using Internet Explorer, search for 'cookies' in your browser's Help menu and follow the instructions to allow cookies.

* Not sure which version of Internet Explorer you're using? Choose Help from the task bar at the top of your browser and select About Internet Explorer.

Mozilla Firefox

  1. Open Firefox and choose Options from the Task Bar.
  2. Click the Privacy tab.
  3. Under the heading Cookies, tick the box labelled 'Accept cookies from sites'.

PDF files

You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to download and use the PDF files. Click the icon to get the latest version of Acrobat Reader:

Get Adobe Reader

Viewing files

Simply browse the Resource libraries and click on the PDF icon of any PDF file you'd like to open.

Printing files

You can print a file by right clicking on the PDF icon beside the resource name and choosing 'Print Target'. Alternatively, when you have the file open, select 'File' and 'Print' on the top menu bar or click the printer icon to print the pages displayed. Make sure your printer settings are UK A4 and not US Letter.

Saving files

You can download a file to your computer by right clicking on the PDF icon beside the resource, choosing 'Save Target As...', and then specifiying where you want the file to be saved.

Troubleshooting

Go to the Adobe Reader support centre

Please note that users of Windows XP may encounter problems opening and using PDF documents, especially if Service Pack 2 has been installed. These can be resolved by re-installing the latest version of Acrobat Reader (downloadable above).

Word, Publisher and PowerPoint files

To use these files you will need to have Microsoft Office or the relevant program (e.g. Microsoft Word) installed on your computer. Most computers nowadays come with this software pre-installed and almost all schools use it. To find out more about Microsoft Office or to get technical help, visit www.microsoft.com/uk.

All members have access to our Microsoft Office files (Word, Publisher or PowerPoint). Once you have logged in, you can view, print and save these files in exactly the same way as the PDF files, by clicking or right clicking on the relevant icons.

The great advantage of the Microsoft Office files, as opposed to the PDFs, is that you can tweak, edit and adapt them in any way you like. You'll need to make sure that your computer is set to open the resources in the appropriate Microsoft Office program, though; otherwise it will open as a web page and you won't be able to edit it:

Windows XP and earlier versions of Windows

Go to My Computer – Tools – Folder Options – File Types – Advanced – uncheck Browse in same window.

Windows Vista

Go to Control panel – Default Programs – Associate a file type or protocol with a program. Scroll down the list to find the relevant file types (.doc, .ppt and .pub) and set the Current Default to Microsoft Office Word, Microsoft Office PowerPoint and Microsoft Office Publisher respectively.

Short-term fix for all versions

If you don't have the necessary permissions to make the above changes (if you're working on a networked computer, for instance) you can use either of these short-term fixes instead:

  • right click on the file icon beside the resource and choose ‘Open in a New Window’ (or 'Open in a New Tab', if you're using Internet Explorer 7.0)
  • right click on the icon, save the file and then open it from your computer.

If these solutions don't seem to work, it could be to do with the version of the Office program that you’re using. Email us, letting us know which version you have and which web browser you're using (e.g. Internet Explorer 7.0), and we'll look into the problem further for you.

Flash and HTML files

You'll need Adobe Flash player to view and use the Flash and HTML files. Click here to get the latest version:

Get Adobe Flash Player

These files can be viewed and printed in the same way as the PDF and Microsoft Office files, by clicking on the relevant icons. See the Help sections within each application for more specific information and instructions.

Whizzy things

You'll need Adobe Flash Player to view and use AQA's Whizzy things:

Adobe Flash Player
