Topic:Collecting and representing data

Specification references (in recommended teaching order)

Specification content Specification notes
S2
  • Interpret and construct tables, charts and diagrams including, for categorical data:
    • frequency tables
    • bar charts
    • pie charts
    • pictograms
    • vertical line charts for ungrouped discrete numerical data
    • tables and line graphs for time series data
    • know their appropriate use

  • including choosing suitable statistical diagrams

S4
  • Interpret, analyse and compare distributions of data sets from univariate empirical distributions through appropriate graphical representation involving discrete, continuous and grouped data, including boxplots

  • know and understand the terms primary data, secondary data, discrete data and continuous data

S3
  • Construct and interpret diagrams for grouped discrete data and continuous data, i.e. histograms with equal and unequal class intervals and cumulative frequency graphs, and know their appropriate use

The subject content (above) matches that set out in the Department for Education’s Mathematics GCSE subject content and assessment objectives document.

    The expectation is that:

    • All students will develop confidence and competence with the content identified by standard type
    • All students will be assessed on the content identified by the standard and the underlined type; more highly attaining students will develop confidence and competence with all of this content
    • Only the more highly attaining students will be assessed on the content identified by bold type. The highest attaining students will develop confidence and competence with the bold content.

Diagnostic Questions - Collecting and representing data
AQA have teamed up with Craig Barton's Diagnostic Questions website to share free diagnostic question assessment for our new 2017 GCSE Maths specification.26/02/2016

Interpreting bar charts, pie charts, box and whisker plots
Card matching activity in which students are required to pair up corresponding bar charts and pie charts (both tiers) and match these to the corresponding box and whisker plots (Higher tier only). There is also the opportunity for students to design their own cards.02/06/2015
Interpreting frequency graphs, cumulative frequency graphs, box and whisker plots
Students compare four sets of cards showing frequency graphs cumulative frequency graphs, box and whisker plots and worded statements which represent examination results. The cards are stuck onto a poster with student writing and explanation for each set for why they match up. 02/06/2015
Pay rates for men and women - Excel Activity
A detailed set of teacher notes and student resources from the Nuffield Foundation in which students consider pay rates for men and women via the use of cumulative frequency graphs drawn in Excel. 02/06/2015
    Sports Injuries
Real life data which students must analyse and represent using an approporiate graph of ther choice, providing commentary on why they think their graph is/isn't the most appropriate. 02/06/2015

    Comparing box and whisker plots
A comprehensive powerpoint and associated worksheet in which students must interpret boxplots in a range of contexts including film genres. The method for drawing a boxplot from a cumulative frequency graph is demonstrated. You will need to register for a TES account to access this resource, this is free of charge. 02/06/2015
    Cumulative frequency with the Avengers
A nice introduction to the construction of cumulative frequency tables and graphs using the context of the adventures of the Avengers. You will need to register for a TES account to access this resource, this is free of charge. 02/06/2015
    Histogram Matching Activity
Students must pair up the grouped frequency tables with the histograms. You will need to register for a TES account to access this resource, this is free of charge. 02/06/2015
    Misleading Graphs
A nice starter or plenary activity in which students need to comment on why the four given graphs are misleading. The graphs include bar charts, line graphs and pictograms.02/06/2015
    Music trends pie charts
This activity provides numerous pie charts representing the changing ways that the music industry has generated income since the year 1980. Students interpret the pie charts to provide a commentary on the trends. You will need to register for a TES account to access this resource, this is free of charge. 02/06/2015
    Pie Chart
A website which explains how to construct a pie chart, followed by ten increasingly demanding questions involving the interpretation of pie charts. 02/06/2015
Pie Chart estimation and angle calculation
An interactive activity in which students must estimate the number of people represented by different sectors of a pie chart. Later questions involve calculation of angles given the number of people represented by a given sector. 02/06/2015

    Coffee Spill Crisis
An activity in which a two way table must be produced for 5 different school-based scenarios which are described in words. You will need to register for a TES account to access this resource, this is free of charge. 02/06/2015
    Drawing and reading histograms
A comprehensive lesson on histograms including a clear explanation of how they differ from bar charts. You will need to register for a TES account to access this resource, this is free of charge. 02/06/2015
    First names and surnames
Students hypothesise whether first names or surnames are longer. They carry out data collection and process the data to produce pie charts. They conclude with a commentary about their original hypothesis. 02/06/2015
