Topic: Formulae and Algebraic Argument (Foundation - Unit 2)

Specification References: N5.6

N5.6 Derive a formula, substitute numbers into a formula and change the subject of a formula.

Candidates should be able to:

  • use formulae from mathematics and other subjects expressed initially in words and then using letters and symbols
  • substitute numbers into a formula
  • change the subject of a formula

Notes

Questions in Unit 2 will include formulae for generating sequences; for example, write down the first three terms of a sequence where the nth term is given by n2 + 4 (see spec. reference N6.1).

Questions in Unit 2 will include formulae in words using a functional context; for example, a formula for cooking a turkey.

Questions may in include formulae out of context; for example, substitute positive and negative numbers into expressions such as , 3x2 and 2x3

At Foundation tier, formulae to be rearranged will need at most two operations and will not include any terms including a power.

Examples

  1. Use the formula ‘wage earned = hours worked × hourly rate + bonus’, to calculate the wage earned when Sarah works for 30 hours at £8.50 at hour and receives a bonus of £46 in tips.
